Annie began her career by accident. Sick of life as a bar manager she knew she needed a “real” job. After applying for countless jobs at once, she got a call back from The Iconic, “I couldn’t even remember applying. I honestly didn’t even remember what the role was.” After stumbling through the interview, she quickly climbed the ladder at the company. “At the time, The Iconic was built on plastic tables, ready to collapse at any moment, but the role was all I needed to spark the entrepreneur in me.” She quickly began freelancing and contracting for agencies, before being headhunted by eBay. After moving to Melbourne to become an e-commerce manager, Annie began to really build her freelance client base until launching Mo Creative early in 2017.

What did you study and what are the steps you took to be where you are today?

Digital Communications. I spent a lot of time doing free and cheap work to grow a loyal freelance client base before going out on my own.

What inspired this career path?

My love for travel and a desire to have the freedom to work my own hours in my own time.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

From memory, I wanted to be a CSI.

What was your first job?

I worked as a receptionist at a GP

Tell us a little more about your role and explain a typical day on the job…

My role is slowly becoming more of a project manager role. A typical day is filtering through my many emails delegating tasks and executing on projects for my many clients.

Name the best and worst parts of your job

The best part is helping people. The worst part is quoting!

What’s the most important career tip someone has given you?

Take risks!

What do you wish someone had told you before starting your own digital marketing agency?

Quit making excuses and just start.

What advice would you give someone starting his or her own business?

To experiment and learn while still working for someone else, so that you have a solid base before stepping out on your own.

What qualities and skills should people who want to start their own small business possess?

Self-motivation is a big one. If you can’t push yourself to get out of bed, or make sacrifices then it isn’t the right life for you.

Name a career highlight

Receiving my official business registration certificate.

What’s next for you?

I want to build Mo Creative into a multinational marketing agency, full of other freelancers from around the globe.
