When you think Sydney Luna Park you think rides, attractions, fairy floss and Coney Island. But for Lauren it’s all about site development, formulating strategies and meeting after meeting. Read what her role as eCommerce and Marketing Specialist at one of Sydney’s greatest attractions, Luna Park, is all about.

What did you study and what are the steps you took to be where you are today?

I studied a Bachelor of Business majoring in Marketing and sub-majoring Public Relations at the University of Technology Sydney.
The best way to get into the industry is to intern, understand the evolving and changing industry (read daily!) and network to align yourself with key industry stakeholders.

What inspired this career path?

My love for technology, analytics and creativity.

Tell us more about your role and what a ‘typical’ day at work looks like…

My current role includes directing campaigns and projects across website development, platform implementation, online advertising and search marketing.
At the moment my typical day at work includes overseeing the current site and reworking/formulating strategy to align with our eCommerce goals, along with a tonne of meetings!
With the redevelopment of two of our sites my role additionally embodies overseeing (and managing) the development of the new sites, strategy formulation, improving UX whilst pre-and during development and the production of content.

Name the best and worst parts of your job

Best: The power of analytics in eCommerce, tracking actions and its correlating result.
Worst: Website bugs and glitches!

What’s the most important career tip someone has given you?

Experience and networking is the key to success. Knowledge is power.

What do you wish someone had told you before starting in digital marketing?

The digital clock works 24 hours a day, be prepared to jump online at any time!

Name a career highlight

Fortunately, I have two!

1. My current website rebuild projects (see above)
2. Starting my own business, The Collective Empire. The business was primarily started as a digital blog across multiple channels, soon shifting into an affiliate based business to produce revenue and create growth. The Collective Empire allowed me to immerse myself in not only the fashion industry but also grow and maintain a more holistic view of the digital industry and its growth.

What do you think are some of the qualities and skills someone should have if they’re wanting to get into digital marketing?

With the industry being so broad, evolving and encapsulating so many different areas there is not a particular set of skills and qualities that an individual must hold to enter the industry. One tip, stay agile, understand the market and be willing to adapt, grow and consistently learn because today’s news is tomorrow’s fish and chip paper.

What’s next for you?

The launch of our new sites! This will include the execution of the site, migration, SEO, content, build and post-launch strategy… A very exciting (and busy) time ahead.
